Hi I'm Jon Gunzel and welcome to the next lesson in the Stories to Success System.

In this lesson we will put it all together to define your purpose and the all-important industry where you will focus you efforts for the rest of your life.

{S2S Intro Splash}

The first time I did the 6 slices exercise myself, I thought, how ridiculous is this?  I only had 2 or three things on each card and nothing seemed to line up.  I stuck with it though an as I continued to repeat the exercise I added more and more until I had a dozen or more answers for each card.

I continued to look, over and over again until all of the sudden some common words came together.  For me it was Personal Excellence, Mental Strength Work, Outdoors, Coaching or Teaching, and Business.

I sat and stared at these words until it finally snapped into place.  Coaching Personal Excellence Through Outdoor Experiences.

That's it!

I love the outdoors.  I hunt, fish, hike, camp, garden and ski and so much more.

I love coaching!  Ever since I was in that Peer Counseling class in high school I've been the one people have turned to for guidance and help in their lives.

And I LOVE personal development and mental strength work.

Coaching Personal Excellence Through Outdoor Experiences.  It fit me like a custom tailored suit.

But how to know if it's really my purpose.  Let's see…..

I had been involved in outdoor activities my whole life.  I ended up being a coach or trainer in ever job I've ever had from Police Work, To Photography, even all the way back to being head lifeguard.

It used all my experience, all my skills and all my training in one way or another.  It was as if I'd been training for this my entire life.  I finally found it.  I knew my purpose!

But now what?

Hopefully by now you have done the 6 slices exercise a few times and found a common thread that seems to tie everything together.  If not just keep going and get help in the Facebook group or on the calls.  Make sure you feel comfortable with it because from here on out everything we do will build on that foundation.  You want it to be solid as bedrock!

Once you've found your purpose, the next step is to look at the United States Department Of Labor -  Industry List.  You can google it or follow the link below.

Look over the list and pick the industry that most closely relates to your purpose.  Click on the choices that sound like possibilities and read the descriptions.  Choose the 1 and only 1 that is the closest for you.  I'll tell you why in a minute.

For me, it was without a doubt educational services.  As I read the description I knew this was what I was created for.  To educate others, to help my fellow men and women achieve amazing results.  To push myself and others to reach new levels of excellence.  I'll sign up for that for the rest of my life.

Turns out that's a very important part of this process.  To sign up for it for the rest of your life, I mean.  Now there is no spot you actually sign up, but it's critical to pick the one industry that matches your purpose and master it.

Why is it so important?  The reason most people never rise above the most basic jobs is they spend so much energy chasing opportunity after opportunity and switching industry after industry.

I was guilty of it too when I was a little younger.  I jumped from hotels, to furniture stores, to even driving a septic truck hoping I'd stumble on the right thing that I could finally succeed in.  With each failure came a new opportunity and I never really mastered anything.

Instead, pick your one industry that matches your purpose and never stray from it for the rest of your life.  Even the most successful people in our world rarely master more than one industry.  Ok, if Stories to Success makes you the next Elon Musk or Bill Gates, you can pick a second one after you've mastered this one.

By choosing your industry and locking in your purpose you've given yourself a very nice gift.  You now have a great structure to test all those opportunities with.  USE THIS GIFT TO TEST EVERY OPPORTUNITY FROM HERE ON OUT AND DON’T STRAY FROM IT.

Here's how it works.  My industry is: Educational Services and my Purpose is: Coaching Personal Excellence Through Outdoor Experiences.

Say I get a chance to get in on some real estate deals.  Does that fit my purpose?  Nope.  Sure I might lose out on some money, but I know very little about real estate and chances are pretty good that I'd lose instead of win.  Worse yet, I wouldn't be making progress in mastering my industry and I'd have to at least split my attention or worse start from scratch.  I can turn that down with absolutely ZERO FOMO

But it works for the little things too.  Like, Where should we shoot these videos today?  Let's see Outdoor Experiences, right?  We shoot outdoors.  Period.  That way I'm always putting myself in an environment  that I love and enjoying the work I do.

Ok, one more:  I get a chance to speak on a stage and teach my 50 States of Mind Program that deals with all the mental strength and mindsets a business owner needs to be successful.  YES!  Let's do it.  No further discussion necessary.

See how nice that is?  It's such a feeling of confidence to be able to make those decisions and KNOW I'm doing the right thing.

So your action steps for this lesson are:

  1. Look at the US Department of Labor Industry list and go through the definitions of industries that match your purpose.
  2. Choose YOUR industry for the rest of your life!  It better make you all giddy and excited or it's the wrong one!
  3. Write down your purpose and your industry on note cards and replace your first purpose card.  You now have your purpose and your industry and they need to stay at the top of your mind from now on.

In the last lesson for this module, we will help you craft your Precision Power Statement that will help you communicate your purpose and industry to others.  You're going to love it!

Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see you in the next lesson!
