Lesson 0.5 - Creating Time | Click To Read More . . .

Hi I'm Jon Gunzel and welcome to the next lesson in the Stories to Success System.

In this lesson you will learn how to create more time in your life to build your new business by integrating your life and becoming more efficient.  You're going to have to do things faster and better than ever before to get this business launched and successful, but going fast isn't the same as getting somewhere.

{S2S Intro Splash}

When I was a kid, maybe 7 or 8 years old, my mom taught me about a man named Fredrick Winslow Taylor.  Now not everything about Taylor was great, but the story that stuck with me was that he was a master of efficiency.  He studied efficiency in his factories down to the smallest detail like the time he perfected the shovel.

He studied the workers that were shoveling ash and the workers shoveling ore.  Originally, there was only one type of shovel for all the workers to use.  Taylor reasoned each material needed its own specially designed shovel and when he applies that technology to the factory, production went up by 468%!

So how does this story apply to us.  Well, imagine if you could increase your daily productivity by 468%.  How much more could you get done in a day?  How we get this done, might blow your mind.  Ready?

So to get more done in a day and actually create time for ourselves, the first thing we have to do is SLOW DOWN!  This one took me a while to wrap my head around but it's critical to your future success and the only way to increase efficiency.  My drill instructor at the Police Academy used to say, "Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast"   We must slow down and take the time to get our business working smoothly so eventually it can be smooth and fast.

Looking back at the shovel story, what was the first thing Taylor did.  HE STUDIED the problem.  So that is step one for us.  We are going to STUDY the things we do each day and find a way to make an improvement in our efficiency.  So let's look at an example.

One thing I do every single day in my business is to enter passwords to all my different programs.  If you stop and look at password management for a minute, two things normally happen.  We either use 1 password for everything or we have hundreds of passwords we have to keep track of.

Having 1 single password seems like the efficient solution right?  Except it's easy to hack and if someone gets that password, now you waste time changing it in EVERY program you have.  But hundreds of passwords seems even more inefficient, having to look them up one at a time.

So what is the solution?  For me, it was an optimization of both.  Since 2001 I've used a password manager called RoboForm.  It allows me to have a different password for each of my 100's of programs and websites and yet use 1 overall password to access everything.  It even syncs across all my devices.

Now, I always have my passwords in a blink and spend ZERO time having to manage them.  Fast right!?!

So I hope you get the idea here.  Between keyboard shortcuts, grocery delivery, laundry services, and Uber, we live in the best time ever to get help being efficient, but we have to first look at the problem, come up with a solution, and then USE the solution every single time to be effective.

At first, I'll tell you, it seems painfully slow to stop and make myself memorize a new keyboard shortcut for Adobe Premiere, the software I use to edit my videos.  But after day one I can use it smoothly and quickly and now I can edit videos in minutes instead of days.  It's so worth it to spend the time today so you don't have to spend the time every day.

So that's how we are going to create time.  Imagine if you took an hour today to learn how to save 5 minutes every day?  In the first year alone that would give you almost 30 hours of time back.  Now imagine if you continued to make your life more efficient every day.  What could you do with this time?  Build your business?  Go on vacation?  Relax a little more?  Sure you could!

We have a saying in our family that is, "Live like no one else, so we can live like no one else."  Efficiency is what we are talking about.  Study everything.  Can you take an Uber and work in the car on the way?  Can you spend 5 minutes less every day getting ready for work?  Can you plan your meals for the week in advance and save decision making time?  There are thousands of minutes a week we can save if we focus on it and make being efficient with our time our #1 priority.

Remember we said business is simply the organization of chaos.  Well, organizing your life and habits is the very best way to eliminate the chaos and CREATE extra time every single day.

We have included an exercise in this lesson called the Efficient Living Worksheet.  It will help you take stock of the things you do every day and one by one you can study each item and find a more efficient way to accomplish these same tasks, freeing up time to work on your business.

Most problems already have a solution created in this world, so spend a little time, research a solution and integrate it into the way you live.  It will feel awkward at first, but force yourself to continue to use the new solution until it becomes automatic for you.  You'll be amazed at how quickly your mind can adapt once it sees a more effective way to do something.

So here's your action steps for today:

  1. Download and use the Efficient Living Worksheet.
  2. Spend time looking at your daily habits in ALL areas of your life and find the places you can be more efficient
  3. Every day, find 1 new way to speed up what you do in a way that gets the same or better results.

In the next lesson, we'll learn how to organize our priorities to help multiply the effect of our new efficiency so we not only get more done, but we get more done in the places that matter most.

Really put your best effort into these lessons.  They will set you up for success if you make them part of who you are .  You're doing a great job.  Keep up the amazing effort and we'll see you in the next lesson.
